When Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) announced third-quarter results on Wednesday, it trotted out mixed numbers for the AOL online unit. The world's biggest media company said AOL scored a better than-expected 46% rise in online advertising. But AOL's overall revenue fell 3% from the year-earlier quarter to $2 billion, as it lost 2.5 million subscribers in July-September. Online advertising agency aQuantive Inc. (Nasdaq:AQNT) said Thursday its third-quarter profit rose 44 percent as all three business segments reported gains, but revenue still missed Wall Street's expectations and shares fell sharply in the extended trading session. Quarterly earnings rose to $13.6 million, or 16 cents per share, from $9.4 million, or 13 cents per share, during the same period last year.
